Kosovo was a disaster... Given that we were engaged in the Algerian civil war throughout 1997 and 1998, we were finally able to go to Kosovo in the spring of 1999, but it was already "too late". One of the little known cases of "ethnic cleansing". Most of the Serbs of Kosovo had left, except in Mitrovica and in a few enclaves. The story remains to be told. Then came the turning point of the millenium, the fateful Fall of 2000, with the start of the Second Intifada in the Palestinian Territories, and we knew we could not struggle on two fronts at the same time.
