Noah Browning, Reuters, July 16, 2014

Living death under blockade

Before July 2014

The "issue of Gaza" has been grossly ignored, neglected, for more than 7 years now, except during times of military operations. When did the blockade really begin ? In the summer of 2007 ? Right after Sergeant Shalit's capture in June 2006 ? After the Israeli disengagement in August 2005 ? Even before, during the presence of some 8,500 settlers who occupied more than 20% of the surface of the Strip, with 1.3 million Gazans at the time living in the remaining 80% ?

Since June 25, 2006 (the capture of Sergeant Shalit) there have been 6 military operations against the inhabitants of the Gaza Strip.

The 1st one was code-named "Summer Rains" in the summer of 2006, and lasted two months, with a toll of 7 killed and 82 wounded on one side, 402 killed and 1,000 wounded on the other. The same summer, war in Lebanon, from mid-July to mid-August, took 167 lives on the Israeli side, some 1,200 on the Lebanese side. The wounded were 2,733 in Israel, 4,446 in Lebanon.

"Summer Rains" was immediately followed by "Autumn Clouds", during most of November 2006, with a toll of 1 killed and 3 wounded on one side, 38 killed and 200 wounded on the other.

After "Autumn Clouds" there was "Hot Winter" which lasted less than a week in early March 2008, with a toll of 3 killed and 8 wounded as opposed to 112 killed and 350 wounded.

"Pillar of Cloud" lasted 8 days in November 2012, 6 Israelis were killed, 223 wounded; 167 Palestinians lost their lives, around 1,000 were injured.

Then came "Cast Lead", one month later, right after Christmas 2008. It lasted 3 weeks, and left 13 Israelis dead, 518 wounded, as opposed to 1,417 Palestinians killed and over 5,300 wounded.

As of August 23, 2014, the ongoing "Mighty Cliff" has reached an unprecedented 68 Israelis killed, over 530 wounded, and over 2,100 Palestinians killed, more than 10,000 wounded (most of them civilians).

In military slang these operations are spoken of as "mowing the grass".

Still, the most developed countries manage to send unmanned spacecraft to land on asteroids and distant planets, millions of miles away, whereas Gaza is just 70 km from Tel Aviv, 350 from Cairo, about 1,200 from Istambul or Athens, and 1,900 from Sarajevo.

The Peace Lines commitment started in 1993, because of the Sarajevo siege, which lasted almost 4 years, and that some call the "longest siege in the history of modern warfare". The Gaza siege being in its 7th year (or 8th, depending how you count), we have found it necessary to search into some of the facts about life in blockaded Gaza.
